Moving Forward

I have lost my job at the high school I’ve been working at for the last three years as a Teacher’s Aide. I did not receive a call one morning to say thank you for your services but there is no longer a position available to you this term. No, it didn’t happen that way. Instead, I had one day of work when school reopened and then nothing else. I rang up and was told that there is limited funding and they’ll keep me in mind. “I’ll keep you in mind”. What a blow to my guts.

It’s been a bit more than two weeks since I’ve gone to work. It feels like forever sometimes. I’m not sure what will happen next. I’m optimistic at the opportunity presented to me. I can start fresh again. I can put all my efforts into the best I can be, instead of settling in a job that underutilised my skills. Even though I am stressed and anxious about the future, I am happy.

On my road to self-discovery, I’ve been asking myself, “What are you really passionate about?” The answers are revealing themselves in mysterious ways. Last night, Richard laid next to me going through his RSS on the laptop. He found a Maths article which led to another article and ironically, an article on success and happiness. Below is a video from the article. It’s Steve Jobs, who co-founded Apple, giving a graduation speech at Stanford University.

Great video clip. Thanks for sharing.

The best thing that ever happened to change my life was lay-off No. 1. The best thing that ever happened to my career in self employment graphic design, was lay-off No. 2.

Keep motivated and positive, there are doors open all around you.

    Take care.

I’m so sorry. My family has been suffering a lot of lay-offs lately, so I know how painful and unsettling they can be. You have a wonderful frame of mind, though… This is an opportunity for you to find what you really want to do with your life. Don’t give up the hope that you have… you’ll find the right thing soon!

I’m sorry to hear about the job loss in your family. It must be tough for everyone there. I’m fortunate that Richard has a stable and secure job which can support us at the moment but I’m not taking anything for granted. Thanks for your support, Shannon.

    Dear Salihan,

I’m really sorry to hear about the loss of your job. It’s difficult to be happy at a time like this. But what’s important is you still have your health, talent and Richard! Keep doing what YOU enjoy and what makes YOU happy. Keep looking and trying new opportunities, I’m sure they’ll come knocking on your door one day, hopefully soon.

There’s many definition of success. I haven’t been a successful graphic designer but I think I have a successful marriage. I think I am a successful mother and wife who has just celebrated her 9th wedding anniversary and is expecting a 2nd child. Still a long way to go, but It’s has been really wonderful and I am happy with my life right now. I haven’t been successful in learning Japanese, but am quite successful in making friends :-)

    I wish you good luck.

It’s so totally their loss, my dear. May I suggest you read (or listen to ,if you like audiobooks) ‘Outliers’ by Malcolm Gladwell while you are pondering your future. I am excited to see where your next adventure leads you.

ooohhh….I’m so sorry to hear about the job! I will send happy, positive thoughts your way that you will find what makes you happy!

As for myself, well I quite my job 6 years ago after the birth of our first child. We lost 40% of our income (although with childcare I wouldn’t have been bringing much home) and I lost one miserable, horrible job. I’ve remained at home because we believe that this is what’s best for our family right now. That may change at some point, but for now success means happy children, a warm and inviting home and a sense of peace for all.

When I decided to go my way alone, I said this in one of my morning prayers:
“YOU are my Provider, YOU are my children’s Provider. If YOU want to give, nobody can deny. If YOU deny, nobody can give.”

I have a job but I am not happy because I feel trapped in it. You don’t have a job but you feel happy. Happiness is a state of mind. You are blessed with the freedom to explore opportunities for growth with no strings attached.

Have faith, Insyaallah, the best is yet to come.

Thank you for sharing the inspiring video.

sorry to hear about the lay-off…just because you are no longer working there does not mean you weren’t appreciated; i’m sure you’ve touched many students’ lives. :)

i’ve been through 3 lay-offs myself. while it’s a scary time, it’s also a time for possibilities…and there is more time for knitting! goodluck in deciding where your next steps will take you! i’ll be sending good vibes your way

That’s sweet of you, Tani. I think I was appreciated by some of the students. Some of them come up to me asking when I’m in their class again and say, “You’re so cool, Miss!” :P Hehe. Almost forgot about that. And yes, I am knitting more! Yay!

I am so sorry to read that you lost yor job. This seems to be a good time for reflection.

  14. Sandra says:

So sorry to hear this happened.

I believe that when a door shuts, God will make sure He leaves a window open.
Perhaps that’s a window of opportunity for you to begin again at something that was meant just for you.
It’s good to read that you are holding up well. Keep up that faith. In the meantime, enjoy some of the things that you didn’t have the time to do before.
    Take care,
