Panda Zoomy Discontinued?

There is talk that Panda Zoomy yarn might be discontinued. I buy this yarn from Kmart regularly but over the last few weeks, they were being sold at clearance prices and the shelves are being re-stocked with other yarn. A fellow blog reader and Zoomy lover emailed me when she heard from her Kmart that the yarn is being discontinued. I have just emailed the manufacturer and I’m waiting for their reply.

A tad of a problem for me as some of my crochet designs {Ravelry} recommend using Panda Zoomy. But I have worked out a yarn substitution which I am satisfied with. I used double strand of DK weight / 8ply yarn to crochet another Nameless Apple and I think both Apples are comparable (and adorable).

Observations:

  • The apples don’t feel the same as Panda Zoomy is softer than the regular acrylic yarn I used.
  • The Zoomy apple is slightly smaller overall.
  • Acrylic yarn holds the shape better than Zoomy yarn. Compare the crochet leaves.
  • Panda Zoomy has a lovely colour variation in the yarn. Using two shades of acrylic yarn might give a similar effect. However, I wasn’t able to find 2 shades of red or green at my local Kmart to test this.

I’m really hoping for some feedback on this. If you have any thoughts or suggestions about the yarn substitution, please leave a comment. I want to take all comments on board before I write up the crochet apple pattern.

I’ll also announce the Apple names I’ve picked on Wednesday. Thank you again for all the creative names you’ve suggested! You guys rock!

I too found the zoomy at discounted prices. In anticpation your apple pattern I bought the last 2 balls of red left at my local Kmart, so I would still like to have the apple pattern in the zoomy, but I would also like to be able to use the pattern in future. Perhaps you could make the pattern with both versions of yarn. I would love to make it both ways.
ALso maybe Panda will bring out a comparable yarn to replace the zoomy. that would be great!

No name yet? How about …ummm…no..nothing’s coming. I hope you find another varigated yarn. I like the red apple, but I think the varigated makes him a little unusual…he’s a bit of a chameleon, that way.

I really love the colour variation of the Zoomy but the other yarn is a lot more vibrant and bold, which I think kids would love.

I was looking at this site and found some similar yarn to Panda Zoomy. The only difference I see is that it’s a little brighter. 🙂

I was looking for this yarn online after seeing it is what you use for your different fruit and came across another by red heart called zoomy… I guess they were trying to make one that looked like the Panda Zoomy? It looked quite a bit the same so maybe it would work! I have never seen or felt either so I have no idea if they are alike. I just thought I’d share what I’d found 🙂

I picked up a couple of bags of zoomy at the Wangaratta Woollen Mill the last time I was there.
I believe they make it for Australian Country Spinners. You could try going to them direct.

The Panda zoomy is still at our local Kmart and I know that the knittingyarnshop.com.au had some on their website too. They have a terrific service and are in Victoria so not too far to send either. They always have great prices.
