I was trying out an office chair, still in my bushwalking clothes, and as I stood up, I heard and felt a pop underfoot. “Oh my god! What was that!?” I yelled out. I looked down and saw a thing,
“It’s a leech!” Richard yelled while I stood there freaking out as the whole thing slowly sunk in. I scrapped blood off my shoes all over the polished shop floor and ran outside.
Richard lifted my long pants up and there it was.
We drove straight home and I stripped off all my clothes. I wanted to be sure there wasn’t another leech on my body. I had a really good shower, partially hoping to wash away the image of the squashed leech from my mind.
You would not believe this but it’s been over five hours and I’m still bleeding! I’ve been resting for so many hours and changed the dressing three times now. I’m not moving off the sofa for the rest of the night. I guess I just have to

Take some salt on your next hike. Check yourself for leeches and if you find one sprinkle it with salt – the leech will fall away. Much better than waiting for the leech to have his fill and drop off when he is fat with your blood!!

Disregard that last bit of advice, I just found this on Wikipedia ….
A common but medically inadvisable technique to remove a leech is to apply a flame, salt or pull it off. These cause the leech to regurgitate its stomach contents into the wound and quickly detach. However, the vomit may carry disease, and thus increase the risk of infection. (I haven’t had any problems using this method but the idea of a leeches vomit on my skin is rather off putting!!)
Here is what you are meant to do ….
One recommended method of removal is using a fingernail to break the seal of the oral sucker at the anterior end (the smaller, thinner end) of the leech, repeating with the posterior end, then flicking the leech away. As the fingernail is pushed along the person’s skin against the leech, the suction of sucker’s seal is broken, at which point the leech should detach its jaws.
Either way ….. Ewwwww!!!

Warning..a graphic leech story follows…
One of my grandmother’s job as a student nurse was to pick up the leeches with tweezers and place them on patients wounds. They sucked off the infectious blood and when they were full they would drop off. Then the leeches would be put aside until they were hungry again.
It worked incredibly well and got rid of a lot of infections.
This was before all the antibiotics that we have now.
I remember her telling me that she had to be very discreet when she did it so that the patients didn’t freak out (she also covered them with gauze).
I guess it’s an older version of how doctors hold the needles out of sight before they puncture you.
Oh and if you sprinkle salt on a leech it will drop off.

You asked me about the title of the book that I mentioned.
It’s called:
Yarn Bombing: The Art of Crochet and Knit Graffiti.
I bought it thinking that it would simply include inspirational photos but it also highlights some of the top artists that are involved in this artform, a history of how many got started and also some really great patterns.
It would make a great Christmas gift.
