I had a day this week when my thoughts were running wild and my heart seem to be racing. A check of my pulse proved that it was all in my head. I was anxious. I was stressed. I desperately needed to slow things down and it doesn’t get slower than quilting by hand.
In, out… in, out… My breathing began to match each hand movement. A slow rhythm took over and I was blissfully lost in it. The restlessness faded and I felt whole again.
Do you have days like that? What do you do to feel human again?
I was wondering what you’re quilting (saw your tweet about your quilt sandwich)!
I’ve been doing a lot of piecing (mystery quilt) and quilting lately–some by hand, most by machine.
When I’m stressed out, I like to quilt, knit, sing praise songs (praying helps too).
I did…
just take a deep breath^^ and relax..

Can you please explain what you are doing on in the second picture??? Is that just a top hand stitch through already stitched quilt pieces? It looks really nice and relaxing!
I love getting your blogs by the way, very nice.
🙂
Thanks for your comment Malissa. I’m actually hand stitching the quilt sandwich together. So the stitches go through the top brightly coloured fabric, the batting and the dark blue fabric underneath. I’ve just used a simple running stitch to hold the 3 pieces of fabric in place. I’ll show you the finished thing soon. 🙂
I knit, something nice and easy — preferably garter stitch, that doesn’t require any thought. And I read, usually an old favorite book that is a comforting read because I know and love the characters and don’t have to worry about what happens, only savoring the language. And like puri says, I breathe. Some slow, deep breaths while sitting or lying in a position where my body can completely relax is incredibly helpful.
I love your idea of quilting, though. And your fabrics are so warm and cheerful, that has to help you relax!
Thanks for sharing that Laura. I like your idea of reading a familiar book. I’ve never thought of that. I do have a few mindless knitting and crocheting projects for stressful moments. And I agree with you that something as simple as garter stitches and deep breathing can be very relaxing.
A walk through some nature is always good – lots and lots of trees make me feel comforted, for some reason.
